The birth of Fred on August 24 1982 changed our lives, as babies will. These photos are from that date until the birth of Jack in February 1987.

The photo was for Measure EE, for rent control in Oakland. It lost narrowly, and gave rise to the Oakland Rent Arbitration system as an alternative.
Fred on October 13, 1983. Oma took most of the photos here and almost always wrote the date of the photo on the back of the print.

Dad built this loft bed for Fred in the bedroom. Later on, Dad built a lower bunk for Jack.
Margot Nicolaus ("Oma") worked with a group of other seniors putting on progressive TV programming on KDOL-TV.
Dad edited the Oakland Tenants Union newsletter. This page shows an ad for The Word Shop, a little word processing business that Dad ran on the side to make money. The phone number was our home landline at the time.
Dad helped organize the anti-apartheid demonstration at the Federal Building in San Francisco. John George was a progressive and very popular political leader in Oakland.
